A downside to using Metamucil for weight loss

Metamucil has only one real downside when it comes to weight loss or weight control.  As a fiber supplement, Metamucil is exceptional.  It's a great way to add fiber to your diet.

A rounded tablespoon of Metamucil with real sugar provides 3 grams of fibras alimentarias.  The recommended use is generally a rounded tablespoon up to three times a day, which would provide around 9 grams of dietary fiber to his diet.  Wearing appetite control, the recommendation is 2 tablespoons before each meal.  By supposing 3 meals, the fiber intake can go up to 18 grams.

The FDA will recommend 28 grams of fibras alimentarias por día.  Used as an appetite control, Metamucil alone is said to cover 18 grams.

And the amount of fiber in the sugar-free version of Metamucil is the same as “with real sugar”.

In terms of macronutrient content, Metamucil is fat free.  It is not, however, without carbohydrates.  Two tablespoons of Metamucil with real sugar contain 23 grams of carbohydrate of which the added sugars represent 16 grams.  Two teaspoons of the sugar-free version contains 10 grams of carbohydrate and zero added sugar.

Although Metamucil has stevia-based versions and other variations, the two most popular seem to be Metamucil's true orange smooth powder and its sugar-free version.  And its popularity is obvious to me.  I love both products.

The taste reminds me of Tang.  And I loved Tang growing up.  It was the astronaut's drink with a full day of vitamin C. What's not to love?  With Metamucil I would get the great taste of Tang with all of the great benefits of fiber.

Yet for all that is great about metamucil, it does come with a real downside.  This downside is the sugar.  Supongamos that Metamucil was used as an appetite control supplement.  Two tablespoons before each meal would provide 69 grams of carbohydrate in game of which 48 grams would be added sugar.  It's not the end of the world, but it's almost the equivalent of a regular can of soda.  It's a lot of sugar.

Because if in using it to control appetite, weight is definitely an issue.  While getting the extra 18 grams of dietary fiber is great, it costs 48 grams of sugar.  And sugar has no nutritional value.  In fact, some could even say that it has negative Nutritional value.

The other popular item is the sugar free version.  With zero added sugar, that would seem to solve the problem of all that added sugar.  However, the subtraction of real sugar is replaced by the addition of aspartame.  Although the FDA has approved aspartame, its value is questionable to some in the weight loss community.  There are a lot of people who drink diet sodas and are still very overweight.

The deduction may be unfair for aspartame, but artificial sweeteners must state the obvious - artificial.  There also seems to be a variation of stevia now, but Metamucil Real Sugar Orange Smooth Powder still seems to be the most popular.

So the question then becomes one of the options.  After all, if one wants to continue enjoying the benefits of Metamucil but wary of all that added sugar or artificial sweeteners (except of course stevia), then what are the options.  Well, one option is to forgo the fiber supplement and focus on the fiber.

If your diet is high in fibrous foods, you don't need a supplement.  One aguacate contains 6.7 grams of fibra.  Apples, carrots, beets, strawberries, broccoli all turn around 2 to 3 grams per porción.  Blackberries and raspberries are five to seis gramos.  Beans and peas are in the order of 7 to 9 grams.  Chia seeds contain a huge cantidad de fibras, medio ambiente 10 gramos por una vez!

Another option is to look at the ingredient list of Metamucil.  It is an envuelve of psyllium.  Psyllium husk is the only source of fiber in Metamucil.  Stripped of maltodextrin, citric acid, and so on, only the psyllium husk remains.

One tablespoon of psyllium husk contains approximately 6.47 grams of sugar-free fiber.  One tablespoon of Metamucil Real Sugar Orange Smooth Powder provides about 3 grams of 8 grams of real sugar.  Measure for measure, the premio directo of the psyllium husk offers better value for money.

Yet in the busy daily life, it can be difficult to get all the fiber you need from whole foods.  And if appetite control is the problem, then a supplement like Metamucil would definitely work.  Also, the experience of drinking psyllium mixed in water is much less flavorful than drinking this wonderful Tang like Metamucil.  In fact, psyllium husk doesn't really dissolve that much in water.  You just need to drink quickly.  Frankly, it's just not pleasant.

For a dietary fiber supplement, Metamucil is a good option.  However, it must be recognized that this comes at the expense of consuming a lot of sugar or artificial sweeteners.  And so when it comes to weight loss or weight control, the 48 gramos suplementarios of sugar and / or artificial sweeteners could be a deciding factor.

Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention Metamucil as a supplement for digestive health, specific to relieve constipation and promote regular bowel movements.  In fact, my initial goal while drinking Metamucil was to help me have a bowel movement.  Sugar and weight control, or loss, aside, I highly recommend Metamucil for this reason.
