Do any weight loss pills really work?

When it comes to losing weight, there is no shortage of pills, drinks and supplements that claim to help you lose weight. But do diet pills help and are they safe?

The best weight loss pills can contain one or more active ingredients intended to increase fat burning, decrease appetite or reduce fat absorption.

Not all weight loss pills and supplements are the same. Some pills can cause unpleasant side effects, while others may not cause weight loss.

A review of 11 studies indicated that orlistat could increase weight loss by a small amount. The review found that those who took orlistat lost an average of 2.9% more weight than those who did not.

Orlistat can cause a change in bowel habits. People taking orlistat may experience side effects, such as diarrhea, stomach pain, and difficulty controlling stools.

2. Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, sodas and chocolate. It is also often added to pills and food supplements.

According to a study of 76 obese adults, people who had high caffeine consumption saw a greater reduction in body fat, girth, and total weight compared to those who had low caffeine consumption.

Side effects of caffeine include nervousness, increased heart rate and sleep disturbances.


3. Glucomannan

Glucomannan is a type of fiber supplement. It works by absorbing water in the intestine, which generates a feeling of satiety that can make you eat less.

However, studies seem contradictory as to whether glucomannan can help you lose weight.

A 2005 study of 176 people indicated that glucomannan contributes to weight loss in healthy and overweight adults.

However, a more recent review of randomized controlled trials indicated that glucomannan did not appear to cause significant weight loss.

For those taking glucomannan, side effects may include gas, diarrhea, and upset stomach.

4. Garcinia Cambogia Extract

Garcinia Cambogia is a fruit that contains hydroxycitric acid, which would help you lose weight.

Garcinia cambogia extract contains the juice of this small fruit and is available as a diet pill. Garcinia cambogia can inhibit or prevent a fat-producing enzyme called citric acid lyase.
