Green tea is one of those things that is really healthy for you, but its health benefits have been greatly exaggerated; one of the things that has always been reported about green tea is that it helps you lose weight, but scientists do not know how (or if) it happens. Now a Poland team believe they have pinpointed this mystery: it is all about the starch.
Jaroslaw Walkowiak University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland, found that a single dose of green tea extract has made people less starch digest and eliminate more of it. It gave people the equivalent of drinking a few cups of green tea each day after they had breakfast.
"Green tea is known worldwide for its beneficial effects on human health," the researchers write in the journal Scientific Reports. "However, the objective data to evaluate the impact in humans is rare."
In fact, green tea is given credit for many health benefits - it is supposed to help in the fight against cancer, but despite suggestive evidence, there is no conclusive evidence that green tea helps prevent or treating cancer.
It is supposed to level the glycemic control but again, the evidence is conclusive, and it is supposed to help lose weight. It is safe to say that green tea is very controversial, but I hope studies like this shed light on what the substance actually does.
"In most subjects (78.6%), the digestion of starch and decreased absorption due to GTE was fast and the aforesaid effect persisted until the last measure."

"Our data suggest that the use of GTE is a viable alternative to pharmaceutical glucoside hydrolase enzyme inhibitors. This plant extract is widely available, inexpensive and well-tolerated, so it has potential utility for weight control and diabetes treatment. Our study supports the idea that pure GTE inhibits starch digestion and absorption. However, the clinical significance of each green tea catechin and the exact mechanism responsible for this action in humans remain to be determined. "
The debate around the green tea will not end anytime soon, but in terms of weight loss, the evidence seems to be accumulating: a few cups of green tea a day can actually help you lose weight .
